Maple Leaf Maple Leaf Foods is proposing to re-locate its Burlington pork processing and slaughterhouse facility to a business park on Hamilton's east mountain near Nebo Road and Twenty Road East. The move has generated considerable controversy. It is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and opposed by Citizens Against Pig Slaughterhouse and Hamiltonians for Development with Vision. The decision process includes the sale of city land to Maple Leaf and its rezoning to permit the proposed use. Maple Leaf initially approached city officials in March 2004. In September 2004 the mayor's office began serious discussions with the company. Word of the proposal first appeared in the media in early July 2005. The first city staff report and council committee meeting occurred in early November. HPD made public statements on November 7 and November 15.
